Unity University Graduates 35th Batch Students
The pioneer private higher education institution in Ethiopia, Unity University, graduated its 35th Batch of 963 students from Gerji Main Campus and SalaM College of Health Sciences, on July 28, 2018, at a ceremony held in the Millennium Hall, here in Addis Ababa. The University also graduated additional 362 students from its Adama Campus and Dessie Campus, on July 29 and August 4, 2018, respectively.
Altogether, Unity University graduated a total of 1,325 students the just ended academic year from its four campuses, namely, Gerji Main Campus and Mekanissa Campus here in Addis Ababa, as well as Adama and Dessie Campuses. The University graduated students with MA, MBA, BA, and BSc Degrees from its Regular, Extension and Continuing Education programmes upon completion of their three to five years of studies. Of the total number of graduates, 137 are graduates of the Postgraduate Programme.
The University’s Postgraduate Programmes, which lead to MA and MBA Degrees, involve Master of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration (Specialization in Marketing), MA in Development Economics, MA in Organisational Leadership, MA in Accounting and Finance, and MA in Business Economics; whereas the Undergraduate Programmes involve Accounting and Finance, Economics, Management, Marketing Management, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Architecture and Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, Sociology and Social Anthropology, Construction Technology Management and Clinical Nursing.
In his brief Congratulatory Message at the Graduation Ceremony held in the Millennium Hall, Dr. Arega Yirdaw, President of Unity University, congratulated the graduating students, their parents and loved ones, as well as the University community and all those who contributed towards the success of the students. In his advice regarding their future, the President said, “You should bear in mind that there is no success without sacrifice. And accordingly, be prepared to extend the perseverance you demonstrated during your academic studies to the actual performance in your future career. By so doing, you will be able to get real satisfaction in your life.”
The President further talked about the prevailing situation in the country and made note of the ongoing reform and the fast-moving events in progress. He underlined that such events would make the graduation even more memorable. He said, “Your graduation has come at such a time that the prevalence of peace, unity and love is strongly propagated throughout the country. I believe that this would be a vivid memory for this year’s graduating students.”
Going into the academic activities of the University, Dr. Arega pointed out that efforts are exerted by the University Leadership and Management to make the University “A Quality House, where students come by their choice”. In this connection, he underlined, “We are certain that the University would be an institution where we would deliver education from KG up to PhD. And for this to come true, we strongly rely on your support. Join the University Alumni Association.”
Speaking on his part, Dr. Birhanu Sisay, Senior Deputy President, Unity University, welcomed and congratulated all in attendance and highlighted on the pivotal role that education plays in the development endeabvours of any country. He underlined that in developing countries like Ethiopia, it is mandatory to equip citizens with quality education so that they would be able to be competitive on world market. In this connection, the Senior Deputy President noted, “The issue of ensuring the quality and accessibility of education is not the responsibility of the government alone. The private sector, too, should play its due role.”
With this in the background, Dr. Birhanu went into the developments regarding Unity University, in which he outlined the academic activities of the University as the pioneer private higher education institution. He pointed out that currently, the University offers 15 Undergraduate and six Postgraduate programmes, at its various campuses here in Addis Ababa, Adama and Dessie. Moreover, he made note of the continued efforts aimed at enhancing the quality of education; and underlined the launching of various branches of Unity Academy as feeder for the University. Dr. Birhanu further stated that Unity Academy institutions would deliver education from Pre-KG to Secondary and Preparatory.
In conclusion, the Senior Deputy President dwelt at length onthe various activities undertaken by the University, which involved construction of new library building underway at Gerji Main Campus; the convening of the regular Annual Multidisciplinary Research Conference; Scholarship Programme offered to MIDROC employees and other needy individuals; and short-term Executive Training Programmes for internal and external employees, among others. He also mentioned about the vertical and horizontal expansion plans of the University. This involved academic and infrastructural development programmes, which are based on needs assessment results.
The programme for the Graduation Ceremony, which started with playing of the National Anthem, subsequently continued through the speeches delivered by pertinent bodies and the Special Award Ceremony. The Chairman’s Award, which is named after Sheik Mohammed Hussein Ali Al-Amoudi, is meant to acknowledge the contributions of exemplary Ethiopians of all walks of life for their distinguished services. This year’s winners of the Award were Professor Desta Hamito, from Unity University, and Ato Eyesuswerq Zafu from outside. (See attached Profiles of the winners)
As per the programme, this was followed by presentation of prospective graduates, which started with the KG children from Unity Academy – Gerji and Keranyo Campuses. The appearance of the little angels, clad in their colourful graduation gowns, was heart-warming, and deserved the applause of all in attendance. They were followed by prospective graduates from Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes as well as Clinical Nursing graduates from SalaM College of Health Sciences. The event culminated with presentation of awards, in the order of Distinction Graduates Degree Award, Gold Medal Awards, President’s Trophy Awards, and Chairman’s Trophy Awards.
Unity University is committed to contributing its due share towards producing knowledgeable, skilled and responsible manpower that the country direly needs for its sustainable development. With this in view, the University strictly observes its long-standing principle of offering programmes in line with identified areas of gaps. Accordingly, besides the existing programmes currently offered, additional programmes are planned to be launched in various Campuses of the University. This is in accordance with the continued horizontal and vertical expansion of the University. Moreover, the University has secured accreditation from the relevant government body to deliver TVET Programme in Accounting and Budget Service, and Animal Production and Marketing Management at its Burayu-Geferssa Campus; registration is already underway.
In accordance with its pursuit for quality education, Unity University has bolstered the drive for strengthening the General Education Sector; a programme that aims at improving the input for the University by way of introducing education from KG through Primary and Secondary; to subsequently Preparatory. It is with this in view that the project, which started with the establishment of Unity Academy – Gerji in 2013/14, expanded to Unity Academy – Adama in 2015/16; and expanded to Unity Academy Keranyo in 2016/17. Unity Academy – Burayu will be operational beginning the coming academic year.
With the accreditation secured from the relevant government body for the establishment of Secondary and Preparatory classes at the Keranyo Campus in 2018/19 academic year, Unity University will be able to realise the lofty ideal of ensuring its input for the outcome of quality education. It is believed that the establishment of Unity Academy branches in various communities, besides making education accessible to the communities, serves instrumental in the pursuit of the University for quality education. With this understanding, the University plans to continue the expansion of branches of the Academy in identified areas, based on needs assessment.
