Students Called upon To Uphold Forefathers’ Pledge To Safeguard Spirit of National Tricolour
The National Flag is the symbol of our unity and independence. It is in this spirit that our forefathers fought foreign aggressors to safeguard the unity and territorial integrity of the country. When we mark the National Flag Day today, it must be with the spirit of renewing the pledge of our forefathers. This statement was made by Wz. Asselefech G/Kidan, Principal of Unity Academy, Gerji Branch, on October 17, 2017, at the opening of the event marking National Flag Day, in the Conference Hall of Unity University.
The Principal noted that Unity Academy was marking the event since its establishment in 2013; and the current one was for the fifth time; whereas it was marked at national level for the tenth time. Going back into historical details, Wz. Asselefech recalled the five years of Fascist Italian occupation of Ethiopia, when the National Flag suffered in the hands of the aggressors and the selfless sacrifices paid by the Ethiopian patriotic forces to reverse the aggression and revive the sovereignty of the nation. The significance of the National Flag as the uniting factor among the various nations and nationalities of the country was also emphasized.
The programme for the day, in which students and teachers actively participated, involved a series of activities, including briefings, poetry recitals, songs, and musical shows. Among the briefings was one presented by a teacher in the Social Science Section, who talked about the meaning, colour combination, dimension and rules and regulations pertaining to the time for hoisting and lowering of the National Flag as well as the penalties set to enforce the rules and regulations. All the activities depicted the significant role the national tricolor plays in the political, social and cultural life of the Ethiopian people and the need to internalise and inculcate the same in all citizens.
