Profiles of Chairman’s Award Winners
Professor Desta Hamito
Professor Desta did his first degree, Bachelor of Science in Plant Science, at Haramaya University; and he acquired his second (MSc) and third (PhD) degrees from University of Kansas, in Statistics and Econometrics. He had served as Lecturer in both Universities; and moreover, he had headed Harama University as President.
Professor Desta started his career in 1969; and he is still actively employed. This makes his years of service close to half a century. Among the posts he held during his long years of service, his role as instructor and leading educational institutions hold the major part. In other fields, he was Deputy General Manager in the Ministry of Industry. He was Senior Agronomist and Statistician in Shawel Consult International. He was Senior Manager in the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). He was Head of the 6.25 million USD programme, which was funded by the United States International Development Agency (USAID). The programme was implemented under the Prairie View A&M University, Texas, USA. The six-year programme, which involved six regions of Ethiopia, was working on improving the productivity of Ethiopian sheep and goats.
Regarding his involvement in research activities, Professor Desta had published about 20 research works into books, articles and bulletins, individually and with partners. He has served and is still serving in nine professional and civic associations as member and consultant. Currently, Professor Desta is serving at Unity University as Vice President, Graduate Studies, Research and Publications.
Ato Eyesuswerq Zafu
Ato Eyesuswerq did his first degree in Management at Addis Ababa University; and he acquired his second degree in Development Economics from Pennsylvania University, USA. Moreover, he had attended training programmes in Insurance profession at the Surbiton College, England; and in Reinsurance profession at the Swiss Re-Training Center, Zurich, Switzerland.
Upon his return to Ethiopia, he joined the Ethiopian Imperial Insurance Company in 1962, and delivered long years of service. Furthermore, he had served as Deputy General Manager of the Blue Nile Insurance Company, until the Derg regime nationalized all financial institutions. Subsequently, he became the first Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ethiopian Insurance Corporation in 1976. Following this, Ato Eyesuswerq had served at the Glanvil Enthoven Reinsurance Brokers, Lagos, Nigeria, as Technical Advisor, Director, and subsequently, Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
After returning to Ethiopia in 1976, besides his role in the establishment of the United Insurance Company, currently, he is the Technical and Relations Advisor of the CEO. Moreover, he is Board Chairman of the United Bank. In the business sector, Ato Eyesuswerq had served for eight years as Vice President and President of the Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce. Furthermore, he had served for three years as President of the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce. He was also elected as Chairman of the recently-established Civil Society Consultative Forum of the Board of Directors of Ethiopian Banks. He is also one of the founders of the Association for the Care of Mental Health.
