The Department of Management and Marketing Management - is one of the Departments of Unity University that existed during the establishment of the then Unity College in 1997. The Department commenced its operation with Diploma Program in Management and introduced BA Degree Program in 1999 and Masters Program in 2007. Currently the Department is responsible for a number of BA and MA Degree Programs in Management, Marketing Management, Business Administration, Organizational Leadership and Project Management.



Masters of Arts Degree in Organizational Leadership



1. OBJECTIVES OF THE MBA PROGRAM


The Masters in Organizational Leadership (MOL) program is developed taking into consideration the following general objectives.

  • Train and develop competent professionals who can assume executive positions in business and society;
  • Produce professionals who are capable of conducting relevant research and taking up academic positions in higher learning institutions;
  • Train individuals who will be capable of providing consultancy services in the areas of leadership and broad strategic governance issues.


2. GRADUATE PROFILE


Graduates of the Masters in Organizational Leadership program are expected to perform the following:

  • Effectively and ethically lead organizations of various types;
  • Lead innovation and organizational change;
  • Create, execute, monitor and evaluate new ventures;
  • Take-up academic positions and conduct relevant research; and
  • Actively participate in growth and transformation plans.

3. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS


To be admitted to the MOL program, applicants should:

  • Have bachelor’s degree or above in any discipline from accredited institution of higher learning;
  • Have achieved a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.0 and above in the undergraduate program;
  • Demonstrate good performance in the entrance examination and/or equivalent admission test prepared by the University.


4. DURATION OF THE STUDY

The total credit requirement for the entire program is 34 credit hours, including project work. The program is organized under a Semester system. .



5. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS


A student to graduate must:

  • Take all required courses for the program and successfully defend the master’s thesis;
  • Achieve a minimum of CGPA 3.00, and earn an average of B or/and with “not more than two-course grade of C’s or C+‘s”.


  • 6. DEGREE NOMENCLATURE


    The degree shall have the following nomenclature both in English and Amharic:

    “Masters of Arts Degree in Organizational Leadership”

    “የአርት ማስተርስ ዲግሪ በድርጅት አመራር”

    Course Description:
    The course examines the field of leadership and management perspectives by analyzing recent theories. Leadership theories such as visionary, servant, transactional and transformational leadership shall be explored in relation to the leadership and management theories globally. The course further deals with the integration of theories and practices from the current reality of globalization.

    Course Description:
    The course introduces meaning and evaluation of organizational behavior. It provides the student with the concepts of individual behavior like perception, value, attitude, and motivation. The course also includes theoretical frame work for group behavior like team work, leadership, power, politics, and conflict. It explains concepts of organizational system such as structural technology, work design, culture and organizational. To provide a basic understanding of individual, inter-personal and group behavior in organizations and how this understanding can be used in the practice of management. Topics for discussion include: motivation, communication and influence, group dynamics, structural design and inter-group relations, planning, control and reward systems, leadership, and organizational development.

    Course Description:
    This course focuses on ethical principles, moral theories, providing the students with the apparatus to make ethical decisions in any given conditions. Ethical problems in leadership of organizations will be analyzed and discussed in accordance to various ethical theories. The course further explores the role of ethics in the study of leadership assisting students on how to deal with ethical dilemma both in personal and institutional settings.

    Course Description:
    This course covers research design, methods of formulating research problem, sourcing and collection of data. The course includes data analysis and presentation approaches. Students are expected to write a research proposal and present their work orally.

    Pre-requisite: None
    Course Description:
    This course presents two major areas namely Financial and Managerial Accounting. The Financial Accounting part includes basic accounting, budgeting, major assets, partnership and corporate Accounting, Managerial Accounting. The concepts of Cost, Cost Volume Profit Analysis and Accounting Information for Decision Making are covered in this course.

    Course Description:
    This course focuses on organizational leadership; team building, motivation, management of change, decision-making and advanced leadership skills.


  • MOL 622. Conflict Management and Communications, Cr. hr. 2, ECTS 4.5
    Pre-requisite: MOL 611, MBA 611
    Course Description:
    The primary focus of this course is on understanding small – group behavior within an organizational context. A part of the class time will be devoted to exploring group behavior and communication patterns within a larger organizational context. Cases will examine roles, behavior, group dynamics, conflict analysis, communications and control, leadership, and a range of issues that constrain organizations. It will also address communication issues and problem-solving as critical elements of organizational behavior. In addition, the general direction of the course will enable the students to examine and question the assumptions on conflict and communications.

    Course Description:
    This course designed to cover the methods used to acquire train, develop, reward employees within an organization. Compensation, performance, and management of lobar are emphasized.

    Course Description: This course introduces the approaches on how a project is identified and formulated. Furthermore, it covers project appraisal, finance, cost system management and evaluation techniques.

    Course Description:
    This course covers methods of evaluating and interpreting financial statements, financial planning, performance operation, and investment opportunities.

    Course Description:
    This course covers concepts and ubiquity of organizational changes, the role of change agents, issues related to innovative changes and ambivalence to change in an organizational context.

    Course Description:
    The course is designed to equip and inspire students to become outstanding multi-national leaders, and to prepare them for positions of leadership and influence in an increasingly interdependent and cross-cultural global world. The course also allows students to understand the current and future trend of global leadership and will provide the skills required to become a global leader. The course also investigates leadership factors that may contribute to effective cross-cultural leadership. Furthermore, culture and cross-cultural leadership will be part of the emphasis of this course.

    Course Description:
    This course is designed to include environmental analysis, component of corporate strategies, formulation and implementation of strategy and actions, and process that should be considered in strategic development. This course is about strategy concerned with how and why firms differ, which naturally extends to an understanding of how firms perform better or worse than competitors. Strategic management is the process by which senior managers formulate and implement an organization’s strategy to achieve this differentiation for long-term competitive advantage.

    Pre-requisite: M0L613
    Course Description: Graduate class students enrolled in this course will be required to start working on the first phase of their thesis work under a supervision of a member of the faculty and they are expected to prepare a research proposal and conduct an independent research project work. The proposal shall submit to an assigned advisor for review and approval. A student will proceed to the next phases of doing final work upon the approval of the advisor.

    Course Description:
