The Architecture and Urban Planning Department, College of Engineering, Technology and Computational Sciences, Unity University, staged the 10th Edition Annual Architectural Exhibition from September 30 – October 3, 2015, at the National Theatre Art Gallery, here in Addis Ababa.
Dr. Arega Yirdaw, President of Unity University and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MIDROC Ethiopia Technology Group Companies, who officially opened the Exhibition, at the conclusion of his two-hour visit of the display, wrote in the Book of Records, “I am pleased to see that the progress registered each year by the Architecture and Urban Planning Faculty of Unity University has become the pacesetter not only for the Faculty, but also for the entire University. This year’s Exhibition is also superb and commendable. Therefore, we will reward you by arranging for you to visit the Renaissance Dam as a group, with all expenses covered.”
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony, Dagmawi Mebratu, Representative of the Exhibition Organising Committee, welcomed all in attendance and made note of efforts exerted by the Department with a view to ensuring quality of education and enhancing practical teaching-learning environment. He further outlined the tasks accomplished by the Department in the course of the year, in which he pointed out, among others, video recording of the teaching-learning process with a view to facilitating further improvement of the process; organising internship programmes to help amalgamating of classroom theory with actual practice in industrial environments; and creating opportunities for closer working relationships of students with Instructors.
Dagmawi underlined that witness to the above-stated practices was the video show screened throughout the four days during the Exhibition, in addition to the hitherto practice of displaying selected works of students. In conclusion, he, on behalf of the participating students and on his own behalf, expressed sincere thanks to all those who contributed towards the success of the Exhibition and expressed his special thanks to Honorary Dr. Sheik Mohammed Hussein Ali Al-Amoudi and Dr. Arega Yirdaw for their continued and invaluable support. Subsequently, he invited Dr. Arega Yirdaw to officially declare the Exhibition open; and the latter did accordingly. Following the preliminaries, high-ranking officials of the Technology Group Management, employees and other invited guests visited the displays.
At the closing of the Exhibition, which remained open to the public for three days, Dr. Arega Yirdaw, once again, thanked the Organisers for the efforts they made to make the Exhibition a reality “with fervor and in such a way that it promoted Unity University as well as yourselves. When I visited the Exhibition on the Opening Day, I did not notice that it took me two hours. If that was the case, then it must have been interesting.” He further appreciated the presentation and suggested that it would be good to preserve each year’s display materials.
The President reiterated that graduating students should be able to meet frequently after graduation; and enable others to draw lessons from their success. With this in view, he recommended that it would be good to establish an alumni. He further noted that efforts would be made to see to it that the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning and HUDA Real Estate would be working in close collaboration. He said, “This will create an enabling environment for practical implementation of the works of the Department. To conclude my remarks, I enjoyed the Exhibition very very much.”
Speaking on his part, Ato Getaneh Lemma, Head, Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, revealed that over four thousand people had visited the Exhibition and there were constructive and encouraging comments forwarded by the public. He further noted that the Department had plans to organise panel discussions on burning public issues, in close collaboration with higher Management of the University.
At the culmination of the Exhibition, Dr. Arega handed out Certificates to students who participated in the Exhibition by presenting their works. On their part, the students presented token prize to Dr. Arega, in recognition of his unreserved support for the Department. Moreover, two students, who presented outstanding works, were awarded special prizes.
Comments forwarded by visitors and registered in the Book of Records expressed the satisfaction with the displays and pride in the potential talents of the students as future Architects of the country. A signed but unnamed comment read, “I am very happy with all works that are presented here. Anyone can see that Unity University is producing tomorrow’s Architects of Ethiopia. I wish all the best for Unity University, producing the best Architects!” Another one wrote, “I am intrigued by what I have seen. In my opinion, most of the designs have depicted the intention that they have been designed for and communicated well for new viewers. I have also seen complex designs that took a lot of research work and dedication. I truly appreciate this Exhibition. Bravo!”
There were also comments from Unity University staffs. Dr. Seltene Seyoum, Director, Research and Publications Office, wrote, “The Exhibition staged by the Architecture and Urban Planning Department is very interesting, entertaining and educational. I wish you could put it in a summary form that will be presented for the next generation. Congratulations!” On his part, Ato Terfassa Digga, Dean of Student Affairs, wrote, “Congratulations Architecture and Urban Planning! You are always the pace makers. Go on, go!”
