DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

   The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the departments of Unity University (Unity) was established in 2004/05 (2011/12 GC). The Department will offer students opportunities to pursue academic programs in a variety of engineering fields; by providing training for regular undergraduate and continuing education programs leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering.

In a developing country like Ethiopia, Civil Engineering has great role and contribution to the economic development and improvement of the living standard of the people. As infrastructure developments are indicators of improved livelihood and ways of investment attractions and tourism; contribution of Civil Engineering in this regard is very crucial. Therefore, this area of study by which many Ethiopians would be produced to serve our country must have clear focus areas that enable fast and sustainable achievements in improving the country’s infrastructure facilities.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN CIVIL ENGINEERING
1.OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM

 This Bachelor of Science Degree program in Civil Engineering is aimed at training manpower that is capable of contributing the development of the country’s Civil Engineering works. This program is focused on providing high quality training required for the realization of the country’s untouched Civil Engineering works. Well qualified Civil Engineers with adequate knowledge in the area of structural, highway, geotechnical and water resources and who can be actively engaged in the planning, development and management of Civil Engineering projects will be produced through this program. Specifically, the trainees will be equipped with the knowledge that enables them to execute the following tasks:

  •             Undertake project identification, pre-feasibility and feasibility study and detail design of Civil Engineering works
  •             Prepare complete contract documents and terms of references for Civil Engineering projects.
  •             Plan, manage, monitor and evaluate the operation and maintenance of Civil
  •             Engineering works.
  •             Remodeling and rehabilitation of existing Civil Engineering works.
  •             Undertake researches in innovating new material for construction of Civil Engineering structures.
  • 2.GRADUATE PROFILE

    Professional Civil Engineers need a good grasp of mathematics and design, and the ability to manage and liaise with a wide variety of professionals. They need to be able to think in all dimensions and communicate ideas effectively. This kind of engineering is suited to people who are practical with a creative characteristic. Hence, the graduate from the Civil Engineering Department has the following profile:

    •             The ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science in a specialized area related to civil engineering;
    •             The ability to design and conduct laboratory experiments, to critically analyze and interpret data, in major Civil Engineering areas such as , Structural, Geotechnical, Transportation, Water resources, Construction Technology and Management, and Environmental Engineering;
    •             The ability to analyze and design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, constructability, and sustainability in selected major Civil Engineering areas such as Structural, Geotechnical, Transportation, Water resources, Construction Technology and Management, and Environmental Engineering;
    •             The ability to identify, formulate and solve Civil Engineering problems in recognized major Civil Engineering areas;
    •             An understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities of Civil Engineers in relation to public and private institutions and in the context of Civil Engineering infrastructure systems;
    •             Recognizing the need for professional licensure and life-long learning;
    •             Knowledge of contemporary issue;
    •             The ability to use the techniques, skills, modern engineering tools and software necessary in selected major Civil Engineering areas, such as Structural, Geotechnical, Transportation, Water resources, Construction Technology and Management, and Environmental Engineering;
    •             An understanding of professional practice issues such as project management and interactions between the development, design, and construction professions;
    •             An understanding of business and public policy and administration fundamentals; and
    •             An understanding of leadership principles and attitudes.
    • 3.ADMISSION REQUIRMENT

      The minimum requirements for enrolment to BSc Degree in Civil Engineering program are as follows:

      3.1;  Admission as freshman level to full-time studies is processed and granted by the Office of the Registrar. The Unity University is open to all but female students will be given special attention. The University will set further criteria s deemed necessary. In general, admission of students to the University is based on the entrance requirements set by the Ministry of Education (MoE). The University may also grant admission at freshman level to the program to a candidate who fulfills one of the following requirements:

          *Admission Following Preparatory Education

      Applicants who have successfully completed Level 4 and above TVET education and MoE requirements and who pass the University’s Entrance Examination can be considered for admission.

          *Students with equivalence letter from HERQA can join the University.

          *Admission with Advanced Standing and Transfer   

      Admission with advanced standing level is processed and granted through the University Registrar. Given the availability of places, admission shall be on competitive basis.

      4.Duration of the Program

      The duration of the study for students in regular degree program is 5 years and for students in extension degree program is about 6 ½ years.

      5.Graduation Requirements

      Students must take and pass all the required courses to satisfy the requirements for graduation. The total number of credit points required for graduation with the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering is around 300 ECTS, including the 30 ECTS mandatory internship (industry placement).

      Graduate students will be awarded the “Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering” if they fulfill the following requirements:
      •             Completion of 300 ECTS minimum Credit hour of 173.
      •             A Minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.00 and a Minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.00 in major courses.
      •             No F, NG, I, in any course and
      •             Compliance with the regulation of the University
      • 6.DEGREE NOMENCLATURE

        After successful completion of all the requirements a student graduating from the Civil Engineering department will be entitled to earn a degree in:

        English: “Degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering”
        Amharic: “የሳይንስ ባችለር ዲግሪ በሲቪል ምህንድስና”

        7.SUMMARY OF COURSES

        The Civil Engineering program employs the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which has been successfully tested and used across Europe, especially following the Bologna Declaration of June 1999.The new structure of studies consists of ten semesters including one semester of Internship (industry placement). Each semester carries about 21 ECTS and the total ECTS load of the program is 300.

        The 1st semester is devoted to orientation and to motivate students to have feelings of being an engineer through basic education and hands-on workshop exercises. Following the orientation semester, the student will go through six semesters of basic civil engineering studies. At the end of the sixth semester, the students will be prepared to the externship program which is proposed to take place at the seventh semester following a successful completion of the sixth semester. After successful completion of the Externship, the students will pursue two semesters of project studies. The 10th semester is mainly devoted to the B.Sc. thesis of 12 ECTS and few Entrepreneurship and Construction Management courses.
