Academy Children’s Friendly Football Match Entertains Audience
Friendly football match played between students of Unity Academy – Gerji Branch and Unity Academy – Keranyio Branch on February 23, 2018, at Mechare Meda Stadium, entertained the capacity audience of students, teaching and administrative staff of the two Schools.
Speaking at the opening of the match, the Guest of Honour, Dr. Tesfaye Teshaome, Deputy President, Responsible for Unity University Campuses outside Gerji, spoke about the efforts being made by the University in the direction of expanding General Educaztion. In this connection, he made note of the establishment of the pioneer Unity Academy – Gerji in 2013, and subsequent expansion into Adama and Keranyo Branches. He further stated that the expansion would still continue; and that plan is underway to establish another Branch in Burayu town. In conclusion, Dr. Tesfaye reiterated that the purpose of the friendly match was to further strengthen the friendly ties among students; and hence, both teams and the audience should observe sports discipline.
According to Ato Tagel Bellete, Principal of Unity Academy – Keranyo Branch, who welcomed the Guest of Honour, the contesting teams and the audience, the objective of the friendly match was to establish and strengthen friendship and close relationship among students of the two campuses. Having said this, Ato Tagel invited the Guest of Honour to get introduced to the contesting teams and officially open the match.
With the preliminaries thus concluded, the match kicked off at almost mid-day. This, coupled with the pitch, which was standard full-size, had serious impact on the performance of the children; although they played 30 minutes each half time. The organisers should take this into consideration and avoid similar flaws in the future. When it comes to the actual match, Unity Academy – Gerji side were completely overpowered by the Keranyo side. There were rumors that there were kids in the Keranyo team who were trained by the former National Coach, Sewnet Bishaw. If we take the rumors for true, the young talents have proved that they could make a difference. There is no need to go into the scores; since what matters was the idea behind the match, which was a total success.
